We started doing sign language with Ethan when he was about 4 months old. Sign language helps babies to communicate before they have the skills to talk. We picked a few signs to start with “cat” “more” “milk” “fan” and a couple of others. Over the past month or so he has shown he understands “milk” (by either lunging for the bottle or my chest whenever we sign it) but he never signed anything back.
We are visiting James’ dad and stepmom in Suches right now and last night we were in the living room looking at the fan and I kept repeating, over and over, “FAN” and doing the sign, and then moving his arm to do the sign too. I said (somewhat jokingly) that I wanted him to do his first sign this weekend!!
Well, I just kept repeating the word and the motion, until finally, when I said the word FAN he would look right at the fan – so I was excited about that. Then we got up to walk around, and we walked into another room… I said, “Ethan, look at the fan!” to make him look at it – and he moved his arm in a circle in front of his chest. OMG!! We walked from room to room, looking at the fans and he did it over and over again!!!! I called Carmen into the room and she saw it too, and then woke up James from his nap and he saw it too! Of course we immediately broke out the video camera and documented it for my dear blog readers…so here you go. I am so proud…I can’t believe he finally signed!! I hope this is the beginning of a LOT of signs….its like his first word!!!

It is my first Mother’s day as a mommy and I have to say, it was a PERFECT day. I got to sleep in and woke up to breakfast in bed and the most beautiful handmade card by James and Ethan. We had a fun day playing outside and a delicious dinner of salmon and swordfish kebabs.
The most special part of the day was the gorgeous poster/card that Ethan made for me – it was his first time fingerpainting. The video below shows Ethan making his very first masterpiece…
Of course, I wasn’t the only person being celebrated on Mother’s Day – we both have the most wonderful moms and stepmom we could possibly ask for – we are so lucky to have such kind, loving, fun, compassionate, understanding moms….and we love them so much.

My nephew Nathan “Nate” Samuel DePlonty was born yesterday at 10:39am, 8 lbs 1 oz, 19.5 inches long. He looks a lot like his daddy Scott. Cece is doing well and big sister Claire has been adjusting well to her new baby brother.
I was a mess all day yesterday – so happy he was here – healthy and safe, and so sad that I am up in NJ and away from my family during this special time. Luckily I’m going for a visit next week. Anyway, here is a pic of baby Nate!

The past few weeks Ethan has really started to LOVE books – he has favorites and he wants us to read them over and over again. Right now his favorites are any in the “5 little” series….5 little ladybugs, 5 wishing stars, 5 little monkeys. He also loves the classic “Pat the Bunny,” as well as “Quack Quack” and “Peek-a-Zoo”

We have had some nice weather up here lately. I realized that I’m usually the one snapping pics and so I rarely am IN any. So this weekend James got behind the camera and he got some fun ones if I may say so myself

Look at my new tooth!!
After a few weeks of being sure his teeth were finally starting to make their grand entrance, one finally did on Saturday. Look how cute it is!! He has another bottom tooth that we can see is coming in not too far behind, and it looks like he has 4 top teeth coming down. He might have been a little late in getting them, but they are coming in fast and furious now!

April 30 was Ethan’s 9 month birthday. This month was also a big one, he learned how to crawl and he gets faster and faster every day. His first tooth is about to pop through his gums and I can see at least one more (and maybe 3) that will be in very soon. The best things that have occurred this month though has been just this sort of intellectual awakening…..he seems to LEARN things every day. He has gotten very very interested in books and has a few favorites now that he will choose to read (and want us to read over and over.) He is “patting the bunny” and interacting with the books that have interaction. He has become very deliberately affectionate – he kisses us, the cats, pictures of animals. He will crawl into my lap and put his head against my chest and just stay there for a minute, snuggling with me, and then crawl away to play. He has started to really figure out how certain toys work – especially his toy car. He will roll it around the living room for 20-30 minutes! He can feed himself, he doesn’t do it consistently, but he gets better every day. He is starting to seem like a young CHILD to us….not just a baby. He is just so fun. I love this age – he interacts and responds to everything. He’s so fabulous
